``I would hope the people
appreciated what they watched today.'' Those words from Rock Island baseball coach Andy
Campbell were right on the money after Saturday's Western Big 6 doubleheader between
Campbell's Rocks and the Moline Maroons on a sun-kissed day at Augustana's Duane Swanson
Stadium.
The split, in which the Rocks won the opener 4-1 and the Maroons took the nightcap 5-2,
saw everything that high-school baseball is supposed to be about.
-- Two very talented teams battling to the last out of both games.
-- Great pitching by both teams, including stellar efforts by Rock Island's Bryant Loy
in the opener and Moline's Kevin Schwarz in Game 2.
-- Outstanding defense by both sides, who combined for just two errors in the twinbill
and saw shortstops Zach Norris (RI) and Justin Yount (Moline) put on a display of how to
play the position.
-- Timely hitting on both sides. The Rocks (22-10, 6-4 in the WB6) scored three of
their four runs in the first game on two-out hits and the Maroons (15-7, 5-3) tallied four
of their five runs in Game 2 on two-out hits.
``It is a lot of fun being a part of games like these,'' said Moline coach Derek
Lindauer. ``Both teams really know how to play the game. Neither team is going to give you
anything and these games were won by the team that executed best.
``They beat us in the first one and we beat them in the second.''
In the opener, Loy scattered five hits to improve to 6-1.
``My cutter was really working,'' said Loy. ``I think I had them guessing at the plate
a little bit. It also helps having this defense behind me. As a sophomore last year, I
pitched against Moline in the conference game and we had eight errors and I gave up eight
unearned runs. Now, we have no errors and I have confidence to let my defense work.''
The Rocks scored a run in the second on hits by Andrew Tarnow (four hits in the
twinbill) and Loy, followed by a sacrifice fly by Garrett George.
Then, Rock Island took advantage of Moline's lone error to tally three in the third on
a two-out RBI hit by Derek Goetzel, followed by a two-run single by Tarnow.
``We executed the little things,'' said Campbell. ``We got the hits when we had to and
we took advantage of their one mistake.''
In the nightcap, Schwarz, the soft-tossing lefty, kept Rock Island off balance in a
complete-game effort. He allowed just six singles and didn't walk a batter until there
were two outs in the seventh.
``There was some pressure after we lost that first game,'' said Schwarz. ``I knew this
game was our season. I was able to stay ahead of hitters and not have to throw my
get-me-over fastball too often. It helps a lot to have some run support.''
The Maroons tallied single runs in each of the first five innings. In the second,
third, fourth and fifth those runs came courtesy of two-out RBI hits.
Jon Grunewald did the honors in the second, Kevin Olson did it in the third,
back-to-back doubles by Blake Boster and Justin Yount scored one in the fourth and Mat
Wismer's RBI infield hit scored a run in the fifth.
``They did it in the first game, getting the hits at the right time,'' said Lindaeur.
``We got the big hits in the second game. I think the doubles by Boster and Yount were the
biggest because it gave us a two-run lead. From there, Schwarz did a super job of working
fast and getting outs.
``The same was true with Loy in the first game. You saw two left-handers really do the
job. This should have been a fun one for the fans to watch.''
