J.J. Tubbs tops Big Ten in academics
J.J. Tubbs, a Rock Island High School graduate and a kicker for the University of Illinois
football team, is putting up some lofty numbers this season -- in the classroom. Tubbs,
a junior at Illinois, was named to the Big Ten's All-Academic team for a third straight
season. This year, though, not only was he the top scholar of the Illinois football team
but also the top scholar of all Big Ten football teams.
The honor comes on the heels of last spring's distinction of Tubbs having the highest
grade-point average of Illini sophomore athletes in all sports.
Tubbs and the Illini are preparing for the Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl, where the Big Ten
champions will take on Louisiana State. Tubbs will be able to return to his Rock Island
home after practice today, but his Christmas celebration will be shortlived. He'll return
to Champaign Sunday as the Illini continue their bowl-game preparations.
