-- Petersen, Miller honored: St. Ambrose University's Karl Petersen and Black Hawk College's Lindsay Miller have garnered weekly honors for their recent play from their respective conferences.

Petersen, a 6-foot-9 senior center, was simply dominant for the Bees as the No. 2 nationally ranked club logged two more Midwest Classic Conference victories to take command of the league race. His efforts landed the Davenport Central prep MCC Player of the Week honors.

On Saturday against Waldorf, he poured in a career-high 33 points and completed the double-double with 14 rebounds in the 14-point victory. For the week, Petersen, averaged 26 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 61-percent from the field. He also added four blocked shots, giving him the league lead in that category with 47.

Miller, a 5-9 freshman center from Elmwood, earned NJCAA Region IV Player of the Week honors by scoring 62 points and grabbing 42 rebounds in three games against Carl Sandburg, Illinois Valley and South Suburban. Her big game came against Carl Sandburg in which she scored 31 points and had 20 rebounds.

College wrestling

-- Rusk hosts youth camp: Former Orion High School state champ and Augustana College and University of Illinois wrestler Steve Rusk is planning on hosting a youth wrestling camp, beginning Feb. 26 and running through the first weekend of July. It will be held in the Augustana wrestling room each Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

``When I was here, that's how I got so much better,'' said Rusk, recalling his formative days. ``I want to get things picked back up in the area.''

One of the big draws for the camp is that Rusk is planning on bringing in guest clinicians -- including former QC standouts as well as wrestlers from Coach Mark Johnson's University of Illinois program as well as some from Iowa City.

The camp is open to wrestlers through high school age and will touch on folkstyle, freestyle and Greco wrestling. The cost will be $100 per wrestler. Part of the camp will include meets against other programs and also tournament competition.

For further information, contact Steve Rusk at (309) 786-9345.

College soccer

-- Two from QCs sign with WIU: Western Illinois women's soccer coach Richard Moller announced his first recruiting class this week, including a pair from the Quad-Cities.

United Township defender Kim Slutz and Assumption two-way player Angie Guy are part of Moller's nine-player class.

``Kim is a player we identified at our summer camp,'' Moller said. ``She is a well-rounded defender who reads the game very well, can challenge in the air with anyone we will face. Her competitiveness will give her and opportunity to make an immediate impact for us on defense.

``Angie is a natural team leader, who will inspire her teammates with her great work ethic. She is a very consistent player who can be counted on to get the job done game in and game out.''

College softball

-- Cooney has big weekend: Former United Township softball standout Christine Cooney went 2-for-3 against Mississippi State, coached by the coach of the United States Olympic softball team. She batted 6-for-16, a .375 average, over the weekend.

Cooney started the first four Bradley games in center field and the last two at second base.

Bradley has four Q-C players on its team. Joining Cooney are Joanna Pettit of Geneseo, Brittany Dehler of Galva and and May Ruthhart of Rock Island. Bradley plays next in Chattanooga on Feb. 20-22. Bradley also plays Western Illinois on April 7 in Macomb.
