Rocky rises in Class 6A rankings
Staff, wire reports Joliet Catholic vs. Chicago Mount Carmel, No. 1 vs. No. 2, two
northeastern Illinois Catholic schools, both perennial superpowers.
On Saturday, Mount Carmel's Caravan rolled over the Hilltoppers 35-21 before a sellout
crowd of 8,000 at Chicago Gately Stadium. Frank Lenti gained his 200th coaching victory,
and Joliet Catholic's 29-game winning streak, the longest current one in the state, was
snapped.
On Tuesday, the Caravan took over the top spot in Class 6A and the Hilltoppers dropped
to second in The AP rankings.
This weekend, Mount Carmel takes on Chicago St. Rita, ranked sixth in 6A. The Caravan
meet No. 3 New Lenox Providence on Oct. 6.
There also were changes at No. 1s in two other classes.
In Class 7A, Bolingbrook bowed to Providence 21-7. Hinsdale South is the new
first-place team, while Bolingbrook fell to fourth.
Class 4A's Lombard Montini lost Sunday to a 6A school, Oak Park Fenwick 10-8. Oregon
replaced Montini atop the rankings, while the Lombard school slipped to fifth.
Locally, in 6A, Rock Island moved up a spot, to eighth, with Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge
falling two spots to No. 9 after a loss to McHenry, No. 3 in 7A.
Cambridge also moved up one spot, to fifth in 1A, with No. 2 Galena falling to sixth
after a loss to Forreston, No. 9 in Class 2A.
ROWVA remained 7th in 1A while Monmouth Yorkwood debuted at No. 10, with Bement falling
out of that spot with a second straight loss.
Geneseo remained No. 2 in 5A while Riverdale (No. 3) and Fulton (No. 4) stayed the same
in 3A.
Riverdale could move to 3-0 after this weekend without even playing its game Friday
against Bureau Valley. A teacher's strike at Bureau Valley threatens to force a forfeit by
the Storm.
Notes: Moline's foe this Friday, Pekin remained fifth in the 7A rankings after
edging Chicago Marist, 18-17, last weekend. ... United Township has already shutout its
first two opponents, and draws Peoria Manual on Friday. Manual was pounded 47-6 this past
weekend by Pontiac, which is seventh in the 5A ratings. ... Geneseo also looks to keep its
season-starting shutout streak alive against Alleman this Friday. The Western Big 6
Conference's Pioneers are 1-1 against NCIC schools already this season. ... Savanna tied
the state's longest losing streak at 47 Friday by falling 47-0 to Stockton. Peoria
Woodruff (1965-69) and Machesney Park Harlem (1988-94) also lost 47 straight games.
