GALESBURG -- One day after clinching the Western Big 6 pennant, the Moline High School baseball team earned themselves a day off for the first day of Class AA regional tournament.

Coach Derek Lindauer's 20-5 Maroons drew the No. 1 seed for next week's Galesburg Regional at Tuesday night's seeding meeting in Galesburg. With it they receive a bye into the semifinal round on Saturday, May 26.

In the first semifinal game at Galesburg's Jim Sundberg Field, Moline will take on the winner of next Thursday's contest between the fourth-seeded Sterling Golden Warriors (17-15) and the fifth-seeded United Township Panthers (18-12).

Rock Island (18-11) drew the No. 2 seed, with regional host Galesburg (17-9) taking the third seed. NCIC rivals Geneseo (16-12) and Princeton (9-16) were seeded sixth and seventh, respectively.

Rock Island will host Princeton in another 4:30 p.m. opening-round game next Thursday, while Galesburg entertains Geneseo.

In claiming the Big 6 championship, Lindauer's Moline club was led by the batting of David Smith, who hit .615 to win the WB6 batting title. Teammate Jay Molina wasn't too far behind with a .571 conference average.

On the pitcher's mound, Wayne DeSmet went 4-0 in league play for the Maroons, followed by Molina, who went 3-0 with a save.

Rock Island's top hitters in Big 6 play were Marcus Youngquist (.606), Nick Carmack (.455) and Jake Meisenbach (.447), while pitcher Clayton George went 3-1 on the mound in addition to batting .400. Teammate Steve Mumma was also 3-1 in league play.

Ryan Kohl was Galesburg's top Big 6 batter with a .458 average. UTHS was paced in league play by John Shappard's .433 average and a .393 clip by Scott Durbin.
