Moline Dispatch Publishing Co.RI, UT Split With Minneapolis Team
Two days after scoring a win over Minneapolis
South in the Metrodome, the Rock Island High School baseball team hoped for an encore on
its home field Thursday afternoon.
Instead, it was the Twin Cities' crew who made it two straight, following a win at the
MetroDome with a wild 12-11, eight-inning victory over the Rocks.
Rock Island is now 6-5 heading into Saturday's Western Big 6 opener with Galesburg.
Rock Island's WB6 rival United Township, which didn't make the trip to Minneapolis,
made the most of its crack at the Minnesotans with an 11-5 victory over South. The 9-2
Panthers open Big 6 play against Alleman.
Taking on South in the opener of Thursday's two-game set, the Panthers jumped ahead
quickly with a pair of first-inning runs. They kept building and building until they
capped the game with a six-run sixth inning.
Winning pitcher Brian LaJeone helped his own cause with a four-hit, two-RBI
performance. Ben Sacco had two hits and two RBIs. Josh Lampe belted two hits and Scott
Durbin drove in two runs.
UT won despite committing six errors, attributed in large part to Thursday's windy
conditions that made any fly ball an adventure.
The wind also plagued Rock Island's fielders in the second game. The Rocks were guilty
of eight errors as they saw a 7-4 lead after three innings fall by the wayside.
Jim Wignall had four hits for the hosts. Jason Amble added three and Nick Carmack and
Dan Morrison each collected two hits. Morrison and Amble each drove in two runs, and Jacob
Meisenbach had three ribbies. |
