In a total reversal from Saturday's Western Big 6
Conference action, the Rock Island Rocks took it to the Moline Maroons in nonconference
action Tuesday at Moline's Holmgren Field.
Rock Island scored early and often, usually coming through in the clutch, to race to a
wild 16-6 victory. That took away a little of the sting from Moline's Big 6 sweep on
Saturday.
``We got some very big two-out hits in the first and second innings,'' said Rock Island
coach Andy Campbell after his club crawled over the .500 mark at 12-11. ``Marcus
Youngquist had a two run single in the first inning and Jacob Meisenbach had a two run
single in the second. That's something we've talked about all season. You have to take
advantage of opportunities and we did that.''
Rock Island scored four runs with two outs in the second inning to jump out to a 6-0
lead. While that didn't last -- Moline came back to tie the game in the bottom of the
second -- the Rocks continued their hot hitting, cruising to the 10-run road victory.
Moline coach Derek Lindauer said the Maroons never gave themselves a chance.
``We just didn't throw strikes,'' said Lindauer, whose team fell to 17-3. ``When you're
not throwing strikes and the other team is hitting well, you don't have much of a chance.
We walked eight batters, but they played well. Maybe things would have been different if
we had been able to get that third out in the second inning.''
Clayton George had a big game for the Rocks, hitting a home run and driving in four
runs. Dan Morrison and Jimmy Dejonghe added home runs for the Rocks. Morrison tallied
three RBIs.
John Gunter picked up the win for Rocky, while Emilio Gomez, 2-1, was charged with the
loss.
