With such a wind blowing it was almost impossible
for a pitcher to get a ball over the plate, the local high school team opened it's season
Saturday afternoon by defeating the alumni by a score of 12 to 3. The game was
played at Exposition park. Despite the wind with which the pitchers contended, the alumni
were to make but two hits off Brough and Reaves, who did the twirling for the school team.
What they lacked in hits, however, they made up for in errors, getting a total of
12. On the other hand the high school team got but six hit, but the wildness of the
alumni pitchers, Brinkerhoff, Smith and Liitt, together, with poor support, made it
possible for the school to hit or score at will. In the field Coach Harmon's scoring
machine showed real promise, as the boys fielded almost everything that came their way,
and despite the weather and the fact that it was their first game, they made but four
errors.
Brough and Reaves put up a good fight for places on
the regular staff and quit about even. The alumni made one hit off each, but poorer
support was responsible for the three runs scored off of Reaves. Tracy and Whisler
played pretty games at short and second, while Calkins showed up well at the initial sack.
Of the two men who worked at third, Kohn and Brough, the latter seemed to have the
edge, as his accurate pegs to first got several men. At the bat, Brough's bunting, three
baggers by Calkins and Townsman, and a two sacker that cleared the bases with three on by
Reaves were the features. |
