Davenport Central exploded for eight runs in the last two innings last night to roar from
behind and post a 9-4 victory over Rock Island in the 1972 baseball opener for both teams. Steve Dau, who starred for the Imps as
a relief pitcher came strolling out of the bullpen in the third inning yesterday after
starter Mike Radech had been bounced around for all four of Rock Island's runs in the
first two innings.
He gave four well-spaced hits
the rest of the way, didn't issue a base on balls and struck out four.
Meanwhile, his Imp teammates
were begining to find the range on the Rocks's Dave Brieby. They began chipping at the
Rock Island lead with a single run in the home third.
Brieby didn't have any
problems in the fourth, but the roof fell in on him in the fifth. Two Imps scored three
times, then came back with a five run burst in the sixth to put the game on ice. Lloyd
Weisbrook accounted for the last three runs with a homer.
Green replaced Brieby with one
out in the sixth and shut down the Central rally, but it was too late.
