Time & place: 7:30 tonight at Galesburg's Thiel Gym, after a sophomore game
at 6.
RI on Saturday: In the first game of the Iowa/Illinois Shootout at 1 p.m., the
Rocks take on the Bettendorf Bulldogs (4-2 going into a game game tonight at Clinton).
``With that starting time, it certainly gets us ready for the Christmas tournament (at
Normal), where you can start at any time of the day,'' said RI coach Thom Sigel.
Galesburg on Saturday: A game against Freeport was rescheduled for Jan. 26. That
means the Streaks, who have had single-game weekends since their Thanksgiving Tournament,
will not have a Saturday game throughout December.
Radio: Both Rocky games this weekend will be on WKBF-AM 1270.
Game notes: A Galesburg loss would tie a school record, set by the 1985-86 team,
for losses to begin a season. That team, which finished 5-19 that year, was coached by Ed
Sennett, who lasted just two years with the Streaks. Much of the Streaks' record can
be attributed to their schedule -- they've faced Aurora West, Moline and Quincy, as well
as Peoria Woodruff and Springfield. ... What concerns Sigel is playing the Streaks on
their home floor. ``That has traditionally been a tough place for conference teams to
play,'' he said. Quincy defeated Galesburg 54-46 last Friday, and the Streaks led at
halftime and trailed by one one after three quarters. ... Galesburg has yet to get a win
at the high-school level. Its sophomores are 0-2 and freshmen are 0-4. ... RI will have 3
new starters -- Munchie Muskeyvalley and Mike Brozovich (who saw their first
action of '01-02 last week) and Bryan Madison. As for Madison, Sigel said, ``We're
trying to find combinations at the wing position, trying to find some consistency.'' ...
RI's Marcus McQueen (2.8 ppg) sprained an ankle early in the week, but will play.
So, too, will Howard Davis (7.6 ppg, 4.3 rpg), who missed a day because of illness.
Brandin Smith, who had 15 rebounds in the Rocks' first WB6 game, returns from a
one-game suspension. ... Sigel was a varsity assistant and head sophomore coach at
Galesburg from 1989-95 after graduating from Knox College in Galesburg. He went from there
to being the head coach at Rock Falls, where he won a state championship. His last game at
Thiel Gym was five years ago, when Rock Falls played Galesburg in a regional tournament
game.
