The Rock Island
Red Sox

President of The Rock Island Red Sox
Mark Tarnow

The Rock Island Red Sox organization was formed in 1994 by  Rock Island High School head coach Gary Bender, who for the next six years, continued to oversee the development of these players as the organization's coordinator.

The Red Sox were organized to give talented younger players the opportunity to receive exceptional coaching, excellent competition, and an expanded schedule.  By enhancing the talents and attitudes of our players, the Red Sox program has prepared these youngsters for the challenges of high school baseball.

Unlike many traveling teams, the Red Sox organization was chartered to provide baseball opportunities for players living specifically within the boundaries of District 41.   Originally designed as a feeder program for our future high school program, the Red Sox have forged a rich tradition of winning baseball, and a tremendous reputation throughout the Midwest.  Wherever our teams have traveled, they have represented our community with style and dignity.

All of Rock Island can be proud of our young Red Sox, who are now "playing the game right", while under the direction of coordinator Andy Campbell. Coach Campbell has made a firm commitment to "teach the right way to approach and play the wonderful game of baseball".

While not all Red Sox players may prove to be high school talent, and while players from other youth baseball backgrounds will certainly represent our Red and Gold at the high school level, parents and players can be assured that their participation with the Rock Island Red Sox will genuinely enhance their baseball knowledge and potential.

The Red Sox will continue to grow and achieve, and while they do, the fortunes of Rock Island baseball will grow as well.  While we are proud of the achievements of our Red Sox over the years, it is obvious that more success and a continuing tradition of excellence will be the end result of our commitment to Rock Island baseball.  Our philosophy of teaching true baseball skills and attitudes has traditionally brought about winning baseball and unforgettable experiences that will last a  lifetime.

By Don Wentler, - Past President of The Rock Island Red Sox
