If you're looking for your Rock Island
baseball fix, you need not look very far. Thanks to Rock Island High School fanatic Chris
Carmack and a group of baseball boosters known as the ``Joe McGinity Gang,'' following the
Rocks is as easy as point and click.
If you're not computer literate, Carmack has made it just as easy to keep up with Rocky
baseball. With his trusty videocamera in hand, Carmack tapes every game home and away and
televises a Rock Island ``game of the week'' every Thursday of the year from 3:30 to 5
p.m. on AT&T cable channel 75.
``Chris is just a baseball lover,'' said Rock Island coach Andy Campbell. ``He's a
great ambassador for our game and our kids. I'm just glad we have him on our side.''
If that wasn't enough, Carmack went one step further this spring. The head ``nut'' of
basenuts.com, Carmack wanted to get the Rocks on the radio airwaves live.
``All these years I've been envious of what Galesburg has with the live radio
broadcasts,'' Carmack said. ``I wanted that for Rock Island. So, I went to Mike Weindruch
(general sales manager for WKBF, WOC-AM 1420 and KUUL-FM) and he said it was a
possibility.
``Then, I contacted Marc Gellerman (longtime Rock Island football and basketball radio
play-by-play voice) and he offered us use of all of his equipment. Mike and Marc have
walked us through everything.''
Still, there was plenty to do. Carmack and his booster friends needed to build a press
box at the high school field, start selling their product and find someone to put it out
to the community.
``Don Wentler has done most of the selling and while we're going to make it, we could
always use more help,'' Carmack said. ``We are doing everything at no cost to the high
school. The most exciting thing is the response we've gotten from people we've asked to be
our guest broadcaster.
``We have Don Sharp, Thom Cornelis, Dan Burich and yourself already committed to do
some games for us,'' he said.
Currently, Carmack has a 12:30 p.m. to late afternoon Saturday time slot on WKBF-AM
1270 for Rocky broadcasts.
``We'll pick it up in the first game of conference doubleheaders and then stay on until
the second game ends,'' Carmack said. ``Then, we'll have the postseason games the Rocks
play.
``I'm just having a blast and I can't thank my wife, Bernie, enough for allowing me to
act like a kid again.''
Campbell thinks what Carmack is doing will help all baseball teams in the Western Big
6.
``It gets a lot of names of players on the radio and that's something that they'll all
remember,'' Campbell said. ``It's a nice thing for Rock Island, but it's a service to the
entire Big 6.''
On tap today: First place in the Western Big 6 is at stake today when unbeatens Rock
Island (4-0) and Moline (4-0) tangle at Rock Island High School. Other Big 6 action has
United Township (2-2) at Galesburg (1-3) and Alleman (1-3) at Quincy (0-4). All three
twinbills begin at 11 a.m.
